PALO ALTO, April 22, 2008 -- Acterra today announced the winners of the prestigious 2008 Business Environmental Awards, identifying ten companies and organizations who have demonstrated extraordinary environmental leadership from among this year’s highly competitive field. Once again, innovative companies have proven their commitment to the environment with their extensive and creative sustainability practices.
Transcendentist, in Berkely, California, won the Susanne Wilson Award for Pollution Prevention/Resource Conservation.
The Transcendentist office, which was opened in 2003 by husband and wife team Dr. Fred and Ina Pockrass, is the first dental office in the country to employ environmentally sound principles in three key areas:
(1) Office design and furnishings
(2) Dental processes and materials
(3) Marketing and patient communications
"The Transcendentist dental office is so impressive because the owners have addressed every environmental issue we could think of and many we hadn't thought of!” remarked Phil Bobel, Lead Judge, “A mercury removal system, digital x-ray and sustainable woods for office furniture are just the beginning."
The Transcendentist environmental innovations became the template for the Green Business Program’s requirements for green dental offices; its efforts have garnered significant regional and national press.

In terms their own resource conservation and pollution prevention, since opening in 2003:

The use of cloth products for steam sterilization and operatory use alone have diverted nearly 60,000 pieces of paper, and nearly 40,000 pieces of plastic from landfill;
-
Digital imaging has prevented the disposal of at least 200 liters of toxic x-ray fixer and 17,200 lead foils;
-
Digital patient charting, which dispenses with paper files, has saved approximately 50,000 sheets of paper
But the Pockrass' see the opportunity for an even greater impact: greening the entire dental industry. This year, they've launched the Eco-Dentistry Association to provide support, education, products, and networking for eco-friendly dental professionals.
